This Just In: Video-Based Driver Safety Technology Saves Lives, Prevents Collisions

Jun 13/2016 Published by:

Did you know there is a traffic collision in the US every five seconds, and that the total cost of collisions exceeds $300 billion annually? In fact, after a relatively long period of decline, heavy truck and bus fatalities and injuries are on the rise again.

The most shocking statistic of all, however, is the fact that 90 percent of all of these vehicle collisions occur as a result of human error.

Five of the key driver-related factors in large truck fatal crashes as identified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) are:

  • Speeding
  • Failure to stay in the proper lane
  • Failure to yield right-of-way
  • Distracted driving
  • Erratic driving

There is a silver lining: If 90 percent of vehicle collisions are caused by human error, this means that 90 percent of vehicle collisions are preventable.

At Lytx, our mission is to harness the power of video, predictive analytics and cloud-based technologies to prevent collisions, save lives and transform businesses. Recently the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute evaluated the impact of our technology on heavy truck and bus collisions. Virginia Tech examined the DriveCam powered by Lytx™ Program and the results are clear: The DriveCam® Program has the potential to dramatically save lives and reduce injuries related to heavy vehicle and bus collisions.

Researchers determined that if our technology was installed in all heavy trucks and busses in the U.S, 801lives would be saved annually, which is 20 percent of the fatalities involving heavy trucks and buses. To put that in context, 801 lives saved is about the same as 15 school buses filled with children. Further, the studies validated that the use of the DriveCam Program could prevent an average of 39,066 injuries and reduce an average of 25,007 truck and bus collisions annually.

Here are some facts and findings from VTTI’s study:

  • Jeffery S. Hickman, a group leader at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, conducted the study
  • The study analyzed data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
  • This research quantitatively evaluated the potential safety benefits of equipping all US trucks and buses with Lytx’s DriveCam Program using a large national crash database (General Estimates System)
