A Video Camera in a Truck Cab Won’t Prevent Accidents

A recent article by Jane Clark of National Lease published in the Trucking News Online, “Just Sticking a Video Camera in a Truck Cab Won’t Prevent Accidents”, underlines how investing in in-cab cameras is just the start to improving driver safety and reducing collisions.

Ms. Clark’s column connects how each of us is recorded every day in various places throughout the day – taking money out of an automated teller, entering a grocery store, driving through intersections – but video alone can’t fully make us safer unless behavior change results . The same holds true for in-cab camera systems in trucks. Information derived from the video system to provide opportunities and examples for more insightful coaching is the real advantage for companies and drivers to invest and use the in-cab camera system.

Ms. Clark’s column states:

A recent study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute for Lytx regarding its DriveCam system concludes that if “every commercial vehicle were equipped with an in-cab video-based driver safety system, about 800 lives could be saved each year and more than 38,000 injuries prevented.”

This was a follow-up to research conducted in 2009 conducted by Virginia Tech for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

By crunching numbers from that earlier study along with numbers in a large national crash database, the conclusion is that trucks and buses equipped with the DriveCam program could reduce an average of 727 fatal truck and bus crashes and save 800 lives.

Sounds simple, but it’s not. Because this isn’t just about the camera. It’s about the entire safety system, which includes a coaching component. As Jeffrey S.Hickman, group leader of the study says, “Simply installing an event recorder in a truck or bus without following the DriveCam program will not yield the results shown in the current report.”

Ms. Clark is right – it is about the entire safety system—such as the DriveCam Program– not just the camera. We know that it’s about pinpointing those moments that can be corrected which will ultimately change driving behavior and save lives.

Ms. Clark concludes by saying “…but if a new technology can actually help prevent death and injury, should we really be fighting it?” We couldn’t agree more.
