Women on the Road

Driving in the 21st Century
Jun 13/2016 Published by: Lytx Lytx Telematics

Dating back to the 20s, women have had a role in the trucking industry. The first woman truck driver to earn a commercial license and drive a truck was Lillie McGee Drennan in 1929. She later became the first female owner of a trucking company called Drenne Truck Line. Drennan pioneered the way for women in the trucking industry. Things have come a long way since then and it is worth recognizing the indomitable women who are helping to keep our economy thriving by driving big rigs, semi-trucks, flat beds, and more.

In honor of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week we want to specifically thank all of the women in the industry (those behind the wheel and behind a desk) not only for their dedication and commitment, but also for their bravery and spirit for being part of an industry that is mostly dominated by men. A typical trucking company has one female driver for every 19 males, according to the Women in Trucking Association.

Despite the trucker stereotype, more and more women are getting behind the wheel than ever before.   As technology advances and perception changes, more women have the opportunity to be truck drivers.

This year we would like to recognize Betty Hoots, a resident of Knoxville, Illinois, who drives for Renzenberger, Inc. Betty sets an example as an outstanding driver. In February of this year, we awarded Betty with one of our “Driver of the Year” awards for her excellence in safe driving. She credits the sincerity of her company to support safety as one of the key reasons she is such a safe driver and won this award. Betty is a great example for all female drivers today.

The growth of women in the industry was also clear last month at the National Truck Driving Championships. The competition is the largest event in the trucking industry and this year’s event attracted over 400 drivers from all 50 states to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to show off their driving skills. Of the 400 plus drivers who participated, 11 of them were female. This was the highest number of female drivers to ever participate in this event’s 77-year history! Last year’s event even had a female winner, Ina Daly, from Avondale, Arizona — a proud Con-way Freight driver.

Next time you drive by a truck and see a female behind the wheel, we hope you will appreciate the long history of women drivers and how far they have come in the industry. Thank you ladies for your dedication in delivering safety out on the roads.
