Transdev is the largest private operator of multiple modes of public transportation in the United States, providing fixed-route bus, paratransit, and light rail service across North America, with 27,000 operators driving more than 17,000 vehicles. With 360 million passenger trips per year, Transdev puts a safety-first culture as its highest priority.

For Transdev, the challenge is massive scale. As the largest private provider of multi-modal public transportation in the U.S., Transdev operates in dense urban environments alongside pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders where service reliability and safety are foundational.

What stood out to me with Lytx was the relationship. It wasn’t just a quick relationship. It developed into a partnership — a willingness to want to see you as a customer succeed in reducing your risk and improving your safety statistics

— Joanna Cornell, Vice President of Safety & Security at Transdev North America, Inc.

Retooling a Safety Program to Target the Risks That Matter Most

When Joanna Cornell joined the company as Vice President of Safety in 2024, she retooled the company’s safety program, using Lytx® Escalate to Coaching workflows to focus on risks that were most strongly correlated with collisions. Because one collision doesn’t generate one cost. It generates five: vehicle repairs, operational disruption, paying for a substitute operator, legal fees, and indemnity expenses.

Early Signs of Momentum, With More Room to Grow

“Since the relaunch, we’ve seen a 15% reduction in risk frequency, a 29% reduction in following distance under two seconds, and a 10% reduction in pedestrian and bicycle events,” Cornell said, noting that she’s encouraged by early signs of the program’s momentum. “Seeing those reductions brings it to the perspective that this really does work. And we’re just beginning.”

Problem

  • Operating at massive scale in dense urban environments alongside pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders
  • Needed to identify which specific risks were most strongly correlated with collisions
  • Each collision generates five downstream costs: vehicle repairs, operational disruption, a substitute operator, legal fees, and indemnity expenses

Solution

  • New Vice President of Safety retooled the company’s safety program in 2024
  • Used Lytx’s Escalate to Coaching workflows to focus on the risks most strongly correlated with collisions
  • Relationship with Lytx developed into a partnership focused on customer success, not just a vendor engagement

Results

  • 15% reduction in risk frequency (Q1’25 vs Q1’26)
  • 29% reduction in following distance under two seconds (Q1’25 vs Q1’26)
  • 10% reduction in pedestrian and bicycle events (Q1’25 vs Q1’26)
